Yankees cut Banuelos and 13 others

The Yankees have had roughly 67 players in spring training so far, but they began cuts today starting with their top prospect Manny Banuelos, according to Chad Jennings of the Journal News.

Four players on the 40-man roster were cut including Corban Joseph, David Adams, Zoilo Almonte, Melky Mesa. The other cuts were C Gary Sanchez, C J.R. Murphy, C Kyle Higashioka, RHP Dan Burawa, RHP Adam Miller, RHP Brett Marshall, RHP Ryan Pope, RHP Graham Stoneburner, and RHP Chase Whitley.

No surprises here. Most of those players had no chance whatsoever of making the team. The only one that is surprising at all is Miller. He never had much of a chance to make the team, but the former 1st round draft pick could potentially have been used out of the bullpen in an emergency situation down the road. Cutting him now is a sign that he has a ways to go before being even being considered in an emergency.

Banuelos is not much of a surprise being cut so early because he needs innings and there really aren’t many to go around for guys that aren’t at least being considered for a major league job either now or down the road. Banuelos is not on the 40-man roster and he would have to pitch lights out to reach the Bronx any time before September.

That leaves about 43 players left in camp, 44 once Andy Pettitte shows up. Expect more cuts soon as starting pitchers become more stretched out and there are fewer innings to go around.
